Flying site

Our main flying site is at Te Mata Peak, Havelock North. Its elevation is about 1300 feet AMSL. It has soarable faces open to the South through to North East. In the summer Te Mata Peak generates good thermal conditions and is affected by sea breezes in the afternoons.

A regional competition hosted by the Hawkes Bay Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club. Limited to an exclusive group of 30 pilots (min req. PG2) who will be launching from the iconic paragliding site 'Te Mata Peak' (weather & wind permitting of course) or the surrounding HB flying areas. The competition is a chance for novice competition pilots and also those with a few more kms on their wings, to traverse the local landscape and get competition flying back to the Bay. December 1 & 2 are reserve days

Flying site

The take off area is intermediate/advanced so first time visitors must see a local pilot before flying. Other sites - Burma Road, Kauahei

Selection will be on a first come first served basis. There is no entry fee

General schedule

First Briefing: 24/11/18 @ 9.30am – Hawthorne Coffee - car park area, Havelock North, 23 Napier Road, Havelock North.

Competition Location: Havelock North & surrounding areas, Hawkes Bay
Launch Sites: Te Mata Peak area – The Trig, Car Park launch, Telecom Tower. Burma Road. Kawhahei.

All pilots must attend the first briefing.

Daily schedule

9.00 am
Pilots to meet at the carpark of Hawthorne Coffee - launch site / plan to be annouced.
Car pooling & travel to launch.
Task will be set & briefed at launch site

When not flying there are plenty of wineries, bike trails, food places, kite surfing, beaches and just general nice places to hang out at

How to get here

Grab a coffee at Hawthorne Coffee and meet in the car park area

Flights to Hawkes Bay from most major centres, easy drive or bus if you are keen.
Auckland - head south SH1 turn left at Taupo
Wellington - head north SH2 & Highway 50
